Ihanzu is spoken in the Tanzanian Great Rift Valley, south of Lake Eyasi. In the field, I stay with an Ihanzu-speaking family on their farm in the small village of Makulo, located in the Mkalama district of the Singida region. Most Ihanzu speakers are also fluent in Swahili, and many are additionally familiar with other local languages, such as Nyilamba (Bantu), Iraqw (Kushitic), Datooga (Nilotic), or Hadza (Isolate).
